The Sabbath Rest: From Shadow to Substance!

Have you ever received a coupon for a free meal at a fantastic restaurant? You treasure that piece of paper. You protect it. You plan your week around using it. But what happens when you finally arrive at the restaurant, enjoy the incredible meal, and the server says, “Your bill has been paid in full”?
Do you then leave the restaurant, dig the used coupon out of the trash, and try to use it again next week? Of course not! The coupon was a promise, a shadow of the real meal to come. Now that you have the substance—the actual, paid-for feast—the coupon has served its purpose. To cling to it would be absurd.
This is the heart of the New Testament’s message about the Sabbath. The Saturday Sabbath was a God-given coupon, a sacred shadow pointing to a coming reality. But in Jesus Christ, the reality has arrived. To insist on clinging to the shadow is to miss the glorious, paid-in-full feast of grace that is our eternal rest in Him.

The New Covenant Christian understands that the map (the Old Covenant) did its job perfectly. It led them to the key (Christ). And now, with the key in hand, they walk into the open doors of the palace (God's grace) to enjoy the eternal, limitless riches (salvation, rest, and fellowship with God) that the key unlocks. The map was essential, but its purpose was to lead you to the key, not to become the destination itself.

#3. The Sabbath Was a "Sign" for a Specific Covenant

*The Claim: The Sabbath is a perpetual, moral command for all people because it's part of the Ten Commandments.

*The Reality: A National Sign for Physical Israel

The Bible is clear that the Sabbath was a special sign for a specific covenant with a specific nation.

# 4. The Danger of Modern-Day Idolatry: The "Harvest" on the Wrong Day

In the Bible, the true **Harvest** is the gathering of souls into the Kingdom of God at the end of the age, a work accomplished by the Holy Spirit through the proclamation of the Gospel (Matthew 9:37-38, Matthew 13:39).

When a group begins to associate this spiritual "harvest" with a specific day of the week or a denominational event, they have created an **idol**. The focus shifts from the sovereign work of God to a human activity. Their trust for spiritual results is no longer in Christ alone, but in their correct observance of a day and their participation in a program.

The Sabbath "event" becomes the idol they serve in the name of producing a harvest, when in reality, they are simply harvesting for their own organization. They are missing the true, spiritual rest—and the true, spiritual work—of the Gospel. The Mosaic Law was given *through a servant* (Moses) for a specific people in a specific time. The Law of Christ was given *by the Son* for all people for all time.

So, brother, sister, you are free. You are free to honor God on Saturday, or Wednesday, and yes, even on Sunday. But as true Christian believers, we **Rest** EVERY day, in Christ.

You are free to rest in the finished work of Christ, knowing that your salvation does not depend on your perfect observance of a day, but on His perfect sacrifice for you once and for all.

**Stop polishing the key. The palace doors are open. Enter in, and find your rest.**

*"So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest..."* (Hebrews 4:9-11a). That rest is a Person. His name is Jesus.
